WDC Helsinki 2012

Cloud City is a part of the Helsingin World Design Capital 2012 program.

We shall demonstrate the possibilities of diversified and ecological building, illustrate the effects of construction and collect opinions. The Cloud City project ponders how we can build more on existing areas: would it be possible to construct an additional building on the roof of an existing city block, and if so, what would it look like and how would it affect its immediate surroundings?

The Cloud City illustrates this additional building in many different ways, for example by using airborne balloons the size of the planned homes. The balloons will be located in such a way that onlookers will have the best possible idea of the location of the homes and the actual size and height of the project.

Tall buildings in Helsinki

Urban city development

Cloud City is a truly unique example of sustainable city development, currently in the state of preliminary planning. The City of Helsinki is reviewing a possible change of the town plan during 2011.

The new building is designed to rise from the inner courtyard of Merikortteli, a majestic block of former industrial buildings dating back to the early 20th century. The project aims to make optimal use of the existing building envelope and infrastructure while still respecting the historical setting and significant heritage.

The inner city of Helsinki will be going through significant change in the coming years. Harbors and other areas of former industrial use are being recycled and transformed into new districts in an effort to prepare Helsinki for the demands of the future – from citizens and businesses alike. Cloud City is leading the way with an aim on increasing attractiveness of the city and to draw worldwide attention to Finnish architecture, design and creativity

Unique living

Cloud City is about combining the peacefulness of a house in the suburbs with the urban romance of a penthouse above the metropolis. Experience the thrilling views in the heart of Helsinki, in a residence like no other.

Outlooks beyond compare are laid in front of your eyes from the apartments above the roofline. The residents may remain undisturbed with the Merikortteli building blocking off traffic noise from far down on the streets. Cloud City offers a range of apartments from the luxurious penthouse of 200 square meters to more compact solutions, bringing unique possibilities to life in the centre of Helsinki.

The apartments offer privacy, luminosity and green space, reflecting the feel of a one-family townhouse. Brilliantly composed cubical structures bring personal space to the areas outside. By dividing the outside walls into smaller sections, it is possible to create an intimate feel to the open areas between apartments. The clean Scandinavian designs and treasuring every ray of light are Finnish architecture at its purest.

Flexible office solutions

Creative space in bundles to suite the individual needs of businesses.

Companies can rent space for a bigger bunch of people or just for a whole lot of ideas. A cluster of pure potential, Cloud City offers an easy environment for businesses to concentrate on the things they do best. In the common spaces, like-minded companies can share experiences and build networks for collaboration, or indeed do business as counterparties.

As the central city area of Helsinki is expanding, also public transportation services are constantly improving around the suggested site of Cloud City. Over twenty kilometers of coastline will be introduced to the people of Helsinki, as walkways on the waterfront will connect Cloud City to the new neighborhoods of Hernesaari and Jätkäsaari making this part of the coastline a new kind of attraction. The new routes of public transportation will add to the daily flow of people, and also the amount of services located nearby will increase with regards to the areas developing around Cloud City.
